FAQ

What is Illustrator, and who is it for?

Adobe Illustrator is the industry-standard vector graphics software used worldwide by designers of all types who want to create digital graphics, illustrations, and typography for all kinds of media: print, web, interactive, video, and mobile.

Can I use Illustrator on iPad?

Yes, you can! Download Illustrator on your iPad and start designing beautiful vector graphics and illustrations, wherever the inspiration strikes. Illustrator on iPad lets you create logos, illustrations, and graphics with the precision of vectors and the freedom of Apple Pencil and iPad.  You can resume work seamlessly across your desktop and iPad using the power of cloud documents.

To get Illustrator on iPad, subscribe to a Creative Cloud plan that includes Illustrator. If you already have an active plan that includes Illustrator, simply sign-in with your Adobe ID on your iPad and download Illustrator for iPad today.

How does Illustrator on the desktop work with Illustrator on iPad?

Any new document you create with Illustrator on iPad is saved as a cloud document, so you can easily access your creative work from iPad to desktop. Cloud documents are automatically synced across devices to create a seamless workflow.

For example, if you want to resume your desktop work on iPad, simply save your Illustrator file as a cloud document.

To view your cloud documents, click the Cloud documents tab on the home screen or access your documents on the Creative Cloud website.

How much cloud storage does Illustrator on iPad provide? Can I upgrade my storage?

Your cloud storage is shared across your Adobe Creative Cloud apps. The amount of your cloud storage is determined by your Adobe Creative Cloud subscription plan. If your cloud storage goes over the given quota, your documents can be saved locally.

What hardware is recommended to make Illustrator run faster?

With native 64-bit support, Illustrator can take full advantage of the available RAM on your system. Many users will see additional performance gains as they add more RAM, with 8GB of RAM being a good baseline, particularly if you run multiple applications simultaneously.

Will my existing plug-ins work with Illustrator?

Plug-ins designed for earlier versions of Illustrator will not work with Illustrator and must be updated. Vendors of the more popular plug-ins have been working to make new versions available as quickly as possible. For more information, contact the plug-in manufacturer directly.

What are the key differences between Illustrator on iPad and Illustrator on the desktop?

You can expect the same tools and functionality on both platforms. Illustrator for iPad has been reimagined to take advantage of iPad's specialties—design with a stylus (Apple Pencil) or touch-based gestures—making actions and tools more intuitive. For example, tracing elements and exploring concepts on iPad becomes easier than drawing with a pen on paper.

The difference you may notice is the user experience around the new touch screen interface. On both desktop and iPad, you can attain the same amount of control and precision with a mouse click to the touch screen. In addition, new magical features have been introduced for Illustrator on iPad, such as Drawing Guides and Repeats (Grid, Radial, and Mirror).
